 Will Birmingham have an inaugural franchise in the Women's Indoor Football League?

    Women's Indoor Football League logoIn a press release, the Women's Indoor Football League announces that Birmingham will have a franchise in the league's inaugural season in the spring of 2014.

Other cities named are: North Conference - New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Richmond, Fayetteville and Charlotte. South Conference - Columbia, Atlanta, Montgomery, Lakeland, Tampa and Orlando. Birmingham will be a member of the South Conference. During the regular season, each team will play 13 games, all within their conference. The top 4 in each conference will advance to the playoffs. Once a conference winner has been decided, the Championship Game will be the only time a team will play another team from the other conference.

The league is owned by Blanchette Sports Holdings, of which Ray Blanchette is President and CEO.

Teams will have an $80,000 player salary cap and the style of play will be 8 on 8 indoor football played using traditional rules.

The league is running a "name the team" contest for multiple franchises, including Birmingham.
