League?
October 1, 2026
An announcement on social media claims that a franchise named the Birmingham Iron
will be a member of the proposed Professional Softball League that is planned to
begin in June 2027.
The PSL's intent is to be a professional women's fastpitch softball league with six teams
currently;
the Iron, Atlanta Smoke, Florida (Bradenton) Vibe, Kansas City Diamonds,
Knoxville Miracle, St. Louis Gateway Gold.
The PSL will be combining seven previously independent softball teams from
around the country into one league. Each team will have a roster of 20 players,
and the season will begin in June and run until August. Each team will play
between 15 and 20 home games and the same number of away games.
Matt Kornegay is the owner of the Iron. Kornegay has spent years helping grow
softball across the Southeast through event leadership and his work with USA
Softball.
The Iron expect to play a part of their home games at Bill Robers Stadium on the
Hewitt-Trussville High School campus. The other home games could be played in
another local stadium.
