Team and League History

With the departure of the Birmingham Steel for the World Basketball Association, Continental Basketball League commissioner Dennis Truax announces that Birmingham will still have a team in the league.

Paul Smith has taken the franchise spot and will form a team named the Birmingham Sabers. Home games will be played at Altamont School.

Truax was happy that Smith was willing to step up to field a team in the city so quickly. "We are disappointed with the recent turn of events in Birmingham. Despite this setback, we will be moving forward with Paul Smith taking over ownership of the Birmingham franchise. We have received commitments from the former Steel players to remain with Mr. Smith and his new team. We applaud Mr. Smith for taking over on such short notice and working diligently to secure his players and financing for the team."

The Sabers will play the Steel's original schedule and will inherit their 1-1 record.
