Popular belief is that the first Black Barons team was an American Cast Iron
Pipe Company (ACIPCO) team that defected to become a professional franchise in
the years following World War I.
In 1920, along with seven other teams, the Black Barons became charter members of
the Negro Southern League.
Three years later, the Black Barons became members of the Negro National League,
which was the highest level of play in black baseball in the United States.
In 1939, the Black Barons were purchased by Tom Hayes, a Memphis undertaker.
November 11, 1947
Owner Tom Hayes announces that "Piper" Davis will be the new Black Barons
manager for the 1948 season replacing Tommy Sampson. Davis has been a player for
the Black Barons since 1943.
