A new hockey league is set to begin play in September of this year, and Birmingham is rumored to be in the running for a team.

The Southern Elite Hockey League will be an independent Jr. A league based primarily in Florida and Alabama. There are also plans for a Chicago, Illinois team.

The local team will be owned by Dean Whitney.

The Florida Gulls relocate to Tampa with new owners and become the Tampa Bay Blades.

Shortly after the season began, the Chicago Force fold due to excessive travel expenses.

Epilogue
The following year, the Southern Elite Hockey League returned to the Birmingham area. The Pelham Prowlers were a great success, winning the SPHL title.

Sadly, the 1999-00 season would be the SEHL's final year.
